By Mohammed Aminu in Sokoto

The Sokoto State Police Command has said that it has intensified efforts to rescue the Syrian national, Abdul Nadir, who was abducted by unknown gunmen at Lambar Mazuru village in Bodinga Local Government area of the state.

Addressing journalists at the police headquarters in Sokoto Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Cordelia Nwawe, said all efforts were being made to rescue the abducted the foreigner.

She said the command had already deployed federal special anti-robbery squad and the tactical team to bring him back to safety.

Nwawe dispelled the rumours making rounds that the abducted foreigner had been killed by the gunmen.

“The abducted Syrian national is not dead contrary to rumours making the rounds in the state. Our men have swung into action and are making real efforts to rescue him,” she said.

She however declined to make any comment on whether the gunmen had demanded ransom.

According to her, the three slain policemen were not official escorts of the abducted foreigner.

Nwawe disclosed that the three policemen that were killed by the gunmen had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites Wednesday night.

She called on residents of the state to be vigilant and provide the police with useful information to enable them nip crime in the bud.

“As you are aware, there is no crime-free society in the world. Sokoto is one of the safest terrains in the North and we are determined to keep it safe.

“That is why we are calling on the people to be alert and help us nip crime in the bud,” she added.

Unknown gunmen had Wednesday killed three policemen and kidnapped Nasir, an engineer and a Syrian national, working with Triacta Construction Company in Sokoto State.
