The Benue State office of AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), Nigeria, has offered free HIV/AIDS testing and counseling to 3,000 persons and distributed well over 100,000 condoms in Makurdi metropolis alone.

Prior to this, the organisation has offered the same services to seven communities in seven selected Local Government Area (LGAs) of the state in the last one week as part of the International Condom Day Celebration on Tuesday

The AHF Coordinator of ART Clinician and Site in Nigeria, Dr. Shuaibu Joseph, disclosed this during the International Condom Day celebration organised by AHF in Makurdi.

The event is coming up a day to the Valentine day celebration, as a move to curtail the sexual excesses of youths during the celebration.

Joseph stated that the International Condom Day (ICD) is usually celebrated on February 13th as a global event, a day before Valentine’s Day in a bid to promote prevention of STDs, (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) including HIV and unwanted pregnancies through free condom distribution, safe sex awareness events and HIV Testing Services (HTS).

Sex education and distributed condoms to the people to encourage safer sexual practices at the rural areas.

In his remark, the Executive Secretary, Benue State Agency for the Control of AIDS (BENSACA), Dr. Dura Gideon, called on all to work against the spread of HIV/AIDS in the state.

Represented by Regina Ameh, Dura observed that cosmetics and other fashion materials, which are “fashionable” and used daily have been liken to condom which should be part and parcel of life as a means of reducing HIV infection among Nigerian youth.

He said stated that just the youth use these cosmetics and materials daily, condoms can now be used to form part of their fashions.

He said, “One of the major ways to be infected by HIV/AIDS is through sex, therefore to avoid contacting the scourge we must use condoms. Condoms have become a fashion, particularly for those that are sexually active.”
